We all know that mega pixels are very important when it comes to choosing a digital camera and in fact mega pixels should be the number one factor when considering the next digital camera you purchase. But what is a mega pixel and what quality can you expect from the various ranges of mega pixels?

Pixels are in fact simply tiny dots of light that make up a digital image. One million pixels is one mega pixel and mega pixels are of course the feature which determines the quality of digital camera pictures.

Next we will discuss the various range of mega pixels and what type of quality the various mega pixels will produce, with this information you will be better equipped to make a decision regarding how many mega pixels you will need in your next digital camera.

1 mega pixel

Almost non existent, however you still may find this range cell phones, PDAs, and very old desktop "web" cameras. They are really only suitable if you intend to email pictures to other people and those people aren't going to be printing them. If you print pictures from a 1 mega pixel camera you will realise the quality is inferior.

1.1 to 2 mega pixels

Only a tiny bit better than the 1.0, this resolution is OK for an average 4x6 snapshot, but once more as per the 1.0 the quality will not be very good at all.

2.1 to 3 mega pixels

This is the start of the fairly decent picture quality range. You can get good 4x6 images and reasonably good 5x7 images. These cameras are very very low cost and
provide a good platform for beginners, or perhaps for your children etc.

3.1 to 5 mega pixels

You are qualified to say that you have a pretty good camera. You get great quality 4x6 images, and fairly good quality 5x7 and 6x9 shots, and just below average 8x10 images.

5.1 to 8 mega pixels

People will be saying "Hey, great pictures!". You can count on amazing quality pictures all the way up to 8x10's.

8.1 mega pixels and up

Getting a digital camera with 8.1 mega pixels or more will result in professional quality pictures whichever size you decided to print. You and your family and friends will be amazed by the pictures.

If you are only going to be viewing your pictures online, such as posting them at a photo site or using them on your web pages, keep your money in your pocket and opt to get a camera with up to 5 mega pixels.

If you will be shooting pictures that will be printed for various purposes, such as for brochures, postcards, etc, then you will need at least a 5 mega pixel camera if not higher. Of course keep in mind that the higher the mega pixel count, the higher the price too.

Once you've solved the mega pixel question, there are various other camera features to consider such as optical/digital zoom and shutter speed etc, however choosing between these should be a simple task after you have debated over the various mega pixels on offer.

Whatever you decide, ensure you have shopped around and done your fair share of comparisons to ensure you have the best deal for yourself.

10 Steps to Digital Camera Heaven

So you are about to purchase a digital camera, you are getting excited about the prospect of having that slick new camera in your hands and you are now off to the store to buy that digital camera you want, right? No, wrong. There are 10 steps you must consider to purchasing a digital camera, read this article then by all means pop down the shop and make your purchase because you will already be wiser.

Here are the ten steps.

1. Know your budget. Yes, unfortunately this is the most important consideration. There is no good in considering the top of the range camera if you are unable to afford it. Also make sure if you going to a store to buy your digital camera, tell the salesman straight away what your budget is! Do not be pressured into expanding your budget.

2. What use is the camera for? Is this for professional use or taking the odd pictures of your children? Will your camera be used mostly indoors, outdoors, or both? Always keep in mind the specific purpose of the camera, this alone will help elimination of the various cameras and help you select the camera right for you.

3. Desire Versus Needs. I think it is obvious that everyone would have the best camera in the market if money was no object, however money is an object for most people and what determines the price of cameras is the amount of features included. When looking at your camera give serious consideration over what features are absolutely necessary. It is all good having a camera with hundreds of features, however if you only end up using several features you have wasted your money!

4. Do your research. Read independent reviews etc. Fight the urge to react to any advert or advice your friend has given you. Although the information they give you may be factual, there may well be a better digital camera on the market. Read and read, and once you become tired, read some more. Then you will have even more knowledge to make an informed decision.

5. Having a LCD screen or not? Having a LCD screen will mean you can review your pictures, however consider that it is an extra cost.

6. Memory Cards. Does the camera have an option to insert memory cards or do you just have the internal memory to go on? Obviously the option for memory cards will result in more flexibility.

7. Pixels and Resolution. The higher the mega pixel range, the better quality the pictures. Again consider that the higher the mega pixels the higher the cost. If you are just using the camera to view pictures on websites etc then a lower mega pixel range may suffice, if however you will be printing large scale photos of your pictures then a higher mega pixel range will have to be considered.

8. Is the camera compatible with your computer? This is not normally a problem, however should be borne in mind for older computers and MAC computers.

9. How user friendly is the camera? The digital camera should be very easy to use. It is no good to you if the digital camera has endless features which you do not know how to use.

10. Consideration of the digital camera brand over the features and price. It is a lot easier to consider the big brands and go with one of their top models, but take a look at the lesser brands which do not immediately spring to mind and look at their models and features, you may well get a better deal.

Using these 10 steps will put you in a better position to purchase your next digital camera.

Why Digital Cameras are Popular and what Features should you Expect

Digital cameras have established a foothold in the market and are slowly but surely wiping away the film camera market. The average digital camera is far superior compare to the average film camera. Although the average digital camera comes packed with extensive amounts of features, the features can vary a significant amount and you should be aware of this if you are considering a purchase.

Cost and the efforts required are two of the major differences between film and digital cameras. Film cameras are substantially cheaper compared to a digital camera, however with a film camera you continuously need to reload film and obviously you need to develop the film and developing the film isn't such an easy task and most of us would prefer doing it from a professional, which adds to the cost. If you go through the process of buying rolls of film and getting the film developed several times, the cost can become significant. On the other hand, digital cameras have the photos saved on the internal memory or on a memory stick/card with easy capability of transferring these photos to a home computer/laptop. Of course when the images have been transferred you are then in control of when and how you print them.

Digital cameras come equipped from user friendly features and a host of options. One of the most useful aspects is the fact that you can instantly review your picture by using the LCD, then if you do not like what you see, you can obviously opt to take another picture. The size and quality of LCDs are making huge advancements year in year out. The crispness of some of the displays is very life like and some of the LCDs are as large as 3 inches.

Most digital cameras also offer video shooting ability. Most will give you the ability to take small video clips and more advanced cameras will give you the option of extended video shooting. Digital cameras also give you the liberty to shoot in many modes like black and white, sepia, tungsten etc, which will of course enable you to create different effects within your photos perhaps giving you that special edge. You can buy digital cameras from many outlets these days, you can opt to shop around and purchase online, or you can opt to go into town and purchase from an official camera store or you could even go down to a big brand shopping store and pick one up there.

What to Consider with Digital Cameras

September 11, 2008 by Digital Camera Reviews · Leave a Comment

It seems that every month a manufacturer is releasing a new digital camera packed with an obscene amount of features, this fact puts the consumer in a great position as far as customer selection and price is concerned, however how about when a person wants to buy a digital camera? How are they supposed to make a selection with so much competition?

Most people will go to the mall, splash out their hard earned cash on a state of the art camera with around 10 Mega pixels, with 2GB removable memory and many adjustable setting and different scene modes and in general an abundance of features. We often make this selection because the manufacturer of whom we are buying from comments on that particular camera being the best in the market, and of course we want the best in the market so we make the selection and part with our money, however then a few months later the same manufacturer releases a brand new digital camera and then comments on that model being the best in the market. This then tends to confuse us and or anger us.

The most important feature of a digital camera is the mega pixel count, a higher mega pixel count will result in higher quality pictures when you enlarge picture for printing, so basically if you have a high mega pixel count, when you enlarge a picture you will get a lot more detail and in general a less blurry image. One mega pixel is the equivalent to one million pixels. Therefore the actual resolution of your image is determined by the mega pixel of your camera.

A good digital camera will nearly always have a large LCD screen to help you frame your subject without you having to use the view finder. A large LCD is also very useful when reviewing images, LCDs come in different sizes and come as large as 3 inches in the present day. The zoom feature is also very important and is an important aspect to consider. Some digital cameras have both digital and optical zooms. Obviously the higher the optical zoom the better. Optical zoom is always better than digital zoom. Optical zooms between 3x and 10x is the normal range to choose from.

Another important feature of a digital camera is the memory. Some older digital cameras will have internal memory, however you will find that modern cameras will come complete with a memory card which of course you can remove and replace when necessary.

The key point to finding the best digital camera is to find one which suits your lifestyle, do not be swayed by any reviews or the manufacturers statement. Simply research and compare. Remember that knowledge is power and should be used in this instance.

Features of a Digital SLR

For people, it is almost second nature to want to document events. It is not surprising that some people will not go anywhere without a camera, since taking pictures is one of the best ways (if not the best way) to capture a moment's feeling. It is a common sight to see most people toting a digital camera to almost every function, so that they can capture even the most mundane events.

Digital cameras have changed the way people take pictures. Gone are the days when people have to worry about bringing enough film to capture enough shots; now people concern themselves with the storage on their camera's memory sticks.

Digital cameras have also allowed people to take almost foolproof pictures, since most models take better shots in lowlight conditions.

While digital cameras have surely provided people with much convenience, there is that fact that digital cameras can only provide little room for creativity. While there are built-in effects on most models, there are those people who want more creative control for their photographs.

Because of that constant want to create artful pictures, people have started to embrace the phenomenon behind the digital SLR.

DSLR or digital single lens reflex cameras have been gaining popularity in the recent years. People who were users of the traditional single lens reflex cameras find joy in using digital SLR cameras, because it strikes a good balance between the different essentials that photographers go for.

Compared to digital cameras or other compact cameras, digital SLR cameras provide better image quality. These cameras provide better resolution; the difference is even more noticeable in higher ISOs.

A faster autofocus is also a great feature in digital SLRs. This is a good feature, since photographers can make sure that they can capture even the unexpected events. These digital single lens reflex cameras also allow faster continuous shooting, which is essential when shooting moving subjects or sporting events.

The photographer can play up with a number of effects with digital SLR cameras.

This is because different accessories can be used with the cameras; among those are the different types of lenses. There are various lenses for different needs like telephoto lens, ultrawide angles, and perspective-control lens, among others. By switching to different lenses, a photographer can get creative with countless possibilities.

These cameras can also be used with flashes, thus allowing the photographer to take better pictures in low light conditions. With regular digital cameras, the photographer will only rely on the camera's built in flash. While this provides acceptable results, specialized flashes for digital SLR cameras are definitely better.

An important advantage of digital SLR cameras over the traditional models is that since digital SLRs do not use film, there is a lower cost to take pictures. This means that the photographer can take as many shots as the storage allows, and he does'nt have to print out the pictures to choose which ones are usable.

The images can be seen immediately on the computer, so the photographer may opt to edit or enhance the pictures right there and then.
